The People

South Africa is home to twelve people groups in three main categories: Indigenous Africans, of which there are nine tribes, the largest being the Zulus and Xhosas; People of mixed race, Coloreds (which is the primary term they use to describe themselves); People of European descent, Afrikaans-speaking Dutch people, and people of British descent who are English-speaking. Up until 1994, South African “apartheid” laws institutionalized racial discrimination. Although much progress has been made since then, there is still great need for racial reconciliation and marketplace equality in the new, young nation.

Most South African towns have surrounding areas known as “locations” or “townships” where vast numbers of black or colored people live.  Many locations are crowded shacks made of corrugated metal and scraps. Besides poor living conditions, these areas are plagued with high unemployment, alcoholism, poverty, and AIDS. The people are in great need of equipping that will empower them to succeed in the marketplace and at home.

South Africans are generally very warm and friendly. Within the first few months of being there, the GMSA team established many close relationships with people from all walks of life. There is a tremendous desire for relationships that cross the lines of ethnicity and nationality. Kindness and respect go a long ways. Building on that foundation of relationship, GMSA has begun serving the people of South Africa and addressing the very serious needs there.  It is awesome to be part of transforming and building a new nation.  Our hope is that you will join us.
